The song Rocking in the Buff by Dry Island Buffalo Jump has just been released! We are raising money in aid of students in hardship.

Please visit the fundraiser page at https://saintsfunder.st-andrews.ac.uk/p/rockinginthebuff/ and donate generously!

All proceeds from the SaintsFunder, plus all money from sales/royalties from downloading and streaming the song will be donated, through Student Services at the University of St Andrews, to students facing hardship from the cost of living crisis.

The song Rocking in the Buff was written and produced by Jonathan Kemp and was inspired by playing music in a pub for the first time after lockdown (at Aikman’s Bar in St Andrews, with Dry Island Buffalo Jump). The idea of raising money for students facing hardship was inspired by speaking to students working multiple part time jobs to make ends meet in the current cost of living crisis. A previous charity single for students facing hardship was released by the band in 2009 (The Credit Crunch Song by Dry Island Buffalo Jump) and received a good level of press interest.

The Dry Island Buffalo Jump band are now: Audio Buff (Jonathan Kemp) Vocals, Guitar, Audio and Video concept, recording and production; French Buffalo (David Evans) Drums, French Poetry; Captain Apocalypse (James Palmer) Bass, Culture and Religion c.400-900; Buff Me Clean (Simon MacLean) Cello, Early Medieval European History; Bald Buffalo (Norman Reid) Flute, Harmonica, Alexander III; Buffalo Emeritus (Chris Given-Wilson) Guitar, Late Mediaeval English Political and Social History; Buffalo Bill (Bill Shackman) Guitar, Soul Food; Buffalo Woodie (Peter Kushner) Trumpet, German Historiography, Scandinavian Carpentry.

In the song, the rock’n’roll pop single format investigates rocks and how they preserve partly flattened representations of the 3D living and breathing experience of life. This draws parallels with streaming and conference calls which themselves allow for a 2D interaction and preservation of the 3D interactions we are evolved for.

The video features is a grid of videos of the actual audio recording sessions. Jonathan Kemp wrote the code for generating this grid of videos effect during lockdown. This code was donated and is built in to the popular REAPER DAW software from 16th of June 2020 “REAPER 6.12c: Black Lives Matter” update onwards under Public Domain license as the new “Combine: Grid of videos” preset for the Video Processor effect. This used countless times for the popular virtual band and virtual choir videos that were especially popular during lockdown.

Hana Jurikova, Theodore Reeves and Stuart Allison of the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews helped with exploring the 330 million year old geology south of St Andrews. Thanks also to University of St Andrews student Rob Johnston for helping with cameras.
